Bad Breath Causes and Treatment

Scientifically known as halitosis, bad breath is an embarrassing condition which will not only affect your social and love life, but it also indicates a serious underlying problem with your dental or physical health.

What are the Causes of Bad Breath?

  • Poor Oral Hygiene – this is the most common reason for having bad breath. When you ignore regular oral hygiene measures, food particles start adhering to your teeth in the form of plaque. Calcification of these food particles (plaque) turns it into calculus which is hard and cannot be removed by brushing. Calculus build up coupled with the bacterial products results in the development of bad breath.

  • Gum Disease (Periodontitis & Gingivitis) – If you do not get a dental cleaning every 6 months, calculus build up could extend beneath your gums causing bleeding (when you brush) gum inflammation, bone loss, and eventually tooth loss. Gum disease is also characterized by persistent bad breath.
  • Smoking and Alcohol – both tobacco and alcohol result in a significant reduction in the flow of saliva in the oral cavity. Because of its decreased volume, the saliva is unable to clean the oral cavity properly, leading to bad breath.

  • Nasal Problems – problems related to the upper or lower respiratory tract can also manifest in the form of bad breath.

  • Gastric Problems – in some cases, the reason behind bad breath is an underlying gastric problem like GERD or excessive acidity.

How is Bad Breath Treated?

At Metro Dental, we treat bad breath by eliminating the underlying cause. If you or your loved ones note that you have bad breath, then you should not take this condition lightly and visit us immediately.

  • Dental Cleaning – A dental cleaning known as a prophylaxis will suffice if the root cause bad breath is the build up of calculus on the teeth. In the event that this calculus build up is sub-gingival (underneath the gum), a deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) will be required.

  • Oral Hygiene Improvement – if the cause of bad breath is poor oral hygiene, we will provide you with detailed instructions regarding oral hygiene maintenance such as the proper technique of brushing and flossing. Our dentist, Dr. Lynn will perform scaling and root planning to remove any plaque and tartar deposits from your teeth which are causing bad breath.

  • Dietary Management – if Dr. Lynn diagnoses that the reason behind your bad breath is due to an intake of foods with a strong odor, she will give you dietary instructions to get rid of this problem.

  • Medical intervention – for medical problems which can cause bad breath, we will refer you to your general physician for the treatment of your underlying nasal or gastric problem.

Remember, bad breath is the worst enemy of your friendships and love life. The good news is that it can be easily avoided and treated if required. If you are having the same problem, visit us right away so that we can give you a refreshing breath and a charming smile.
