Dental Cleaning

Professional dental cleaning, also known as dental prophylaxis is a preventive procedure which is aimed at maintaining a beautiful smile and optimal dental health. During a professional dental cleaning procedure, Dr. Lynn will remove plaque and tartar deposits from your teeth which are the main reason behind the development of gum and periodontal problems.

Why is Professional Dental Cleaning Necessary?

While brushing and flossing are effective measures for maintaining good oral hygiene, these alone are not enough for preventing teeth cavities and gum problems. This is because the bristles of a toothbrush are not able to completely remove food particles from the nooks and crannies of our teeth, especially the ones at the back, resulting in gradual adherence of plaque and tartar deposits. To prevent these plaque and tartar deposits from causing periodontal problems, regular dental cleaning by a dentist or hygienist is necessary.

What Happens During Dental Cleaning

During a dental cleaning, Dr. Lynn will use a special instrument whose tip vibrates at an ultrasonic frequency and is able to remove the adherent plaque and calculus deposits from the teeth. Once all the teeth have been cleaned, Dr. Lynn will polish the teeth with a special paste. This is done to reduce the roughness of the surfaces of teeth and to delay or minimize the chances of re-adhesion of plaque and calculus deposits on the teeth. After the procedure, you may feel that your teeth have become sensitive. But there is no need to worry as it will go away within 2-3 days.

How Often Should I Get Professional Dental Cleaning Done?

The need for dental cleaning depends primarily on your oral hygiene status. Generally, it is enough to get your teeth cleaned twice in a year if you have don’t have any long-lasting gum disease or teeth cavities. However, if Dr. Lynn feels that you have higher chances of getting teeth cavities and periodontal issues, she may recommend you get your teeth professionally cleaned after every 3 months.

In dentistry, prevention is always better than finding a cure afterward.
