Mouthguards

Mouthguards are thin, removable protective shells which are worn over the teeth.

Who Needs a Mouthguard?

At Metro Dental, we recommend mouthguards in the following cases:

  • Contact Sports – mouthguards are very effective in preventing damage to the teeth and associated structures in children or adults who are involved in contact sports like football, soccer, boxing martial arts or rugby.

  • Non-contact Sports – mouthguard is also good for individuals who are involved in recreational sports like mountain biking or skateboarding, as these sports also carry chances of dental injury.

  • Teeth Grinding – a modified form of mouthguards, known as the nightguards, are recommended for preventing tooth damage in patients who have a habit of excessively grinding their teeth.

What are Different Types of Mouthguards

There are generally three types of mouthguards:

  • Custom Mouthguards at Metro Dental – these mouthguards are individually customized for each patient and are prepared at a dental office. Dr. Lynn will make an impression of your teeth and send it to the dental laboratory. At Metro Dental, we use high-quality materials for preparing mouthguards to make sure that they have excellent fit and allow you to speak and breath without any difficulty. Custom mouthguards offer the best fit, esthetics, and conveniences among all types.

  • Stock Mouthguards – these are available in stock sizes at virtually all supermarkets and convenience stores. They are not very expensive in comparison to other types of mouthguards. However, they don’t always fit properly, are bulky and create difficulties in breathing and speech.

  • Boil and Bite – these are made from thermoplastic materials which can be molded to any shape when they are boiled. They are placed in hot water to soften them. Once it reaches a bearable temperature, the mouthguard is worn, and it acquires the shape of your teeth. These mouthguards have a better fit than the stock mouthguards. However, they are uncomfortable to wear and create problems in speech.
